This is the Podcast for providers and advisers looking to share business ideas and inspiration in the world of protection and finance.

Platforms form the foundation of the financial advice process for many investors.

My guest today started Platform People a company providing advisory, resource and due dilligence services for advisers looking to compare platforms.

Chris believes the best way to look after his clients is for him to look after his people.

Before starting Platform People Chris worked in Financial Services, Software, Consulting, Engineering, M&A and Retail.

Earlier he was a Military Helicopter Pilot with the Army Air Corps for 14 years. So he has strong personal values regarding integrity, honour and delivery, no matter what the task is and is always looking for people with similar values to work with.

MPAF20 – Andrew Gething on Changing Protection Underwriting

This is the Podcast for providers and advisers looking to share business ideas and inspiration in the world of protection and finance.

Underwriting gets a good deal of bad press. But is it justified?

In the advised protection market the consequence of price competition on term assurance and critical illness products is tighter underwriting, more medical evidence and more ratings.

Online applications and tele-underwriting can help speed up the process but clients face disappointment when they find their premium is higher than originally quoted.

Is it time we changed the way we quote for protection products so we do not raise client expectations with cheap headline rates more people cannot obtain?

My guest today pioneered tele-underwriting in the UK and firmly believes that we need change. But what does "good" look like?

Hear Andrew's views on the current relationship between quoted premium rates and the final rates we offer after underwriting. Listen to his proposed solutions on how we can change underwriting from the current sometimes painful process to a valuable individual assessment.

That’s all right here in episode 20 of the Marketing Protection and Finance Podcast.

Who is Andrew Gething?

Andrew is founder and MD of Morgan Ash.

Before that he was a Chartered Structural Engineer and entrepreneur starting several other companies one of which was an IT specialist.

In his spare time Andrew is currently walking all the Wainwrights – that 214 hills in the Lake District of which he has only 22 more to do.

MPAF17 – Rhys Williams on Using Clear Language in Financial Services

This is the Podcast for providers and advisers looking to share business ideas and inspiration in the world of protection and finance.

Complex language. Jargon. Passive sentences.

Dull impenetrable language is often the consequence of the complex propositions we develop in the financial services industry.

When we live with it day to day we tend to think that everyone, including our clients and customers can understand, and indeed get excited about, what we write. The reality is that they neither understand it nor get excited by it.

My guest today works for a company that is devoted to clarity of communication. They specialise in words. They think words are an untapped opportunity for businesses.

My guest in Episode 17 is Rhys Williams.

Listen to how you can introduce clarity into your communications. When you’re good at using words, you’re not just better at winning customers or closing deals. You’re better at explaining your ideas, sharing your enthusiasm, and getting stuff done.

Who is Rhys Williams?

I’ve wanted to get Rhys on the podcast since day one because I share his passion and that of his company, Quiet Room. And that is to communicate simply – with no jargon, officious language or passive sentences.

I’ve heard Quiet Room described as word geeks – but they are a communications consultant that focuses on clarity.

Rhys is Strategy Director. A little known fact about Rhys is that he has a platinum disc from a one minute flute solo he contributed to Morrisey’s “You Are The Quarry” album.

MPAF16 – Paul Avis on Auto Enrolment for Group Income Protection

This is the Podcast for providers and advisers looking to share business ideas and inspiration in the world of protection and finance.

Pensions Auto Enrolment has been a great success. Government publicity has created inertia with high sign up rates to schemes so far. It’s created opportunities for advisers across the industry.

My guest today argues that the Government should build upon the success of Pensions Auto Enrolment and introduce a similar Auto Enrolment scheme for Group Income Protection. His views has sparked an intense debate between those who feel more compulsion is unnecessary and those who feel this would benefit employees, employers and the Government.

My guest in Episode 16 is Paul Avis.

Listen to how Auto Enrolment for Group Income Protection might work and how easy it would be to incorporate the choice into Pensions schemes.

Hear how such a development could help alleviate the burden on firms to comply with the Equality Act and provide a business benefit such as assistance with occupational and statutory sick pay.

Who is Paul Avis?

Paul is Marketing Director at Canada Life Group Insurance, and before that has had marketing roles at Legal and General, Unum and Aviva.

A keen sportsman, Paul notes his interests as Bath Rugby, Somerset Cricket, Swindon Town Football, Diving, and Skiing.

He also says he loves the Caribbean Island of St. Lucia and is about to obtain dual citizenship of the Caribbean by marriage.
