Thor Holt on perfecting presentations and pitches and killing confirmation bias - MAF118

My guest in this show is Thor Holt.

We chat about how to perfect a presentation or a pitch. We also look at how to kill confirmation bias. You know, the phenomenon which means people only consume content that confirms their own beliefs.

And what this means for the stuff you've been reading about Trump and Brexit and what the public think about industries like financial services.

Welcome to episode 118 of the Marketing and Finance Podcast.

Who Thor Holt?

Thor believes every individual and every business can make a bigger splash!

His mission as a coach is to help you make more impact. He does this by listening to you, helping you discover and then build on your own (often quietly remarkable) strengths.  He helps people prepare winning pitches, presentations and job interviews.

James Daley on Fairer Finance and raising standards in financial services customer experience - MAF116

My guest in this episode is James Daley from Fairer Finance.

We talk about raising standards in financial services customer experience.

Welcome to episode 116 of the Marketing and Finance Podcast.

We chat about:

  • How ratings help customers pick companies on factors other than price
  • Getting beyond blissful ignorance to find out what customer service is really like
  • The insurance power of three - claims stats, Ombudsman complaints, and transparency
  • Why you have to move beyond "legally watertight" to focus on what is fair for the customer

Who James Daley?

James has been a financial journalist and consumer rights campaigner for more than 16 years. In March 2014, he launched a new consumer group and financial consultancy - www.fairerfinance.com.

Their tables rank financial services companies based on how they treat their customers, how good they are at handling complaints and how transparent they are. These ratings are designed to help customers of insurers and banks look beyond price - and also to encourage companies to compete on service and transparency.

Fairer Finance makes its money by changing the industry from the inside out - working with companies to create clearer documents, and more transparent customer journeys.

Fairer finance isn't trying to villainise the industry, it's dedicated to raising standards.

James believes companies shouldn't just tell their customers they're fair and good - they should show it.

Put content creation at the top of the to-do list in 2017 - MAF112

This week’s show is a call to action for 2017.

It’s time for you to start putting content out there. To build your brands. To engage with your clients and to build your businesses. And we’ll be listening again to some of this year’s great guests and their insights and ideas on how you can do just that.

Welcome to episode 112 of the Marketing and Finance Podcast.

In this last episode of the year, I want to use the advice of some of my past guests to encourage you to produce more of your own marketing content next year.

During the last 8 months, I’ve presented to three large groups of financial advisers. Financial Liverpool, The Protect Association and most recently the Voyant User Group. We talked about financial professionals upping their game on marketing their businesses and creating brands for themselves.

All the equipment you need is in your pocket or your bag. Your smartphone can be a live TV outside broadcast unit – using Facebook Live, Periscope or YouTube to broadcast live video. It’s an HD or 4K video camera letting you shoot better than broadcast quality footage. It’s an audio recorder letting you put together podcast episodes, like this one, where you talk about your subject or interview an expert. It can take superb photographs. And the dictation app will let you write articles by speaking into your microphone.

With this remarkable device, you can create content to engage your clients. To answer their questions. Marketing is no longer only available to those with big budgets.

In this episode, using snippets of wisdom from past MAF guests we’re going to have a look at what you can achieve.

What you'll hear about in this episode

  • How to use the smartphone in your pocket or bag to create blogs, podcasts, videos and more
  • The key to making content your clients want rather than what you think they want
  • How to keep your messages simple, be approachable and be you
  • Why you should consider live streaming video for your business in 2017
